Safeway/Woolworths do not want the Disability $$$

Bruce Bromley

I visited my local Safeway (Narre Warren Vic) on Friday and noticed they have installed a new Freezer cabinet for ice creams and deserts.

The size of it resembled the Mother Ship from Battlestar Galactica (refer photos below)

The most concerning thing about this unit is it's height above ground (1000mm) and the distance below the surface product is positioned (on average 300mm). These distances are significantly greater than the reach ranges as detailed in AS1428.2. This makes this virtually totally inaccessible by someone in a wheelchair as those of a short stature.

To give you an idea of the sheer size/bulk of this cabinet I have positioned our standard size pram beside it.

Designs like this need to be thought through and external advice be sought if relevant.
